Job purpose

The purpose of the Senior Legal Counsel Biotechnology role is to support the Head Legal Biotechnology in the management of legal matters in scope of and impacting the Biotechnology Platform and Novartis’ External Supply Operations (ESO).

Key Responsibilities

• To act as lead lawyer for biologics Supply Relationship Teams within ESO Biotechnology, an organisation responsible for managing the network of strategic external biologics manufacturing partners
• To be a member of the Biotechnology Legal Team as well as the ESO Biotechnology Leadership Team actively contributing to the design and execution of the function’s strategy
• To add value to decision-making of impacting Biotechnology, and to provide legal support for all biologics manufacturing activities across the divisional portfolios
• To provide strategic legal support during the negotiation, drafting and review of various development and commercial agreements related to Biotechnology, its network of sites and external contract manufacturers, including projects, collaborations and alliances and provides advice in relation to related regulatory topics
• To act as legal partner for NTO Business Development and Licensing (BD&L) providing timely, pragmatic and clear NTO input into biologics BD&L (out-licensing, in-licensing and product divestments) and M&A transactions, as allocated from time to time, and supporting the implementation of transactions post-closing with contract interpretation, contract amendments and strategic and legal advice as required
• To manage potential disputes and dispute resolution relating to Biotechnology transactions, especially with suppliers, contract manufacturers and alliance partners
• To collaborate effectively with other members of the NTO Legal team (in particular the ESO Legal Team), the NTO organization as well as with other legal, business and functional stakeholders in the divisions, GDD, NBS and NIBR

Novartis Technical Operations (NTO) was established to centralize management of our manufacturing operations across our Innovative Medicines and Sandoz Divisions, with a goal of further improving efficiency. NTO is expected to optimize capacity planning and adherence to quality standards, and to lower costs through simplification, standardization and external spend optimization. Centralization is also expected to improve our ability to develop next generation technologies, implement continuous manufacturing and share best practices across divisions.

NTO includes approximately 26,900 full-time equivalent associates and 68 manufacturing sites across our Innovative Medicines and Sandoz Divisions.

Mindestanforderungen

The ideal candidate will have

• Law school graduate & Bar member
• Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of other languages is a plus
• Extensive commercial legal experience in an international environment in-house and/or at a law firm with broad experience in handling pharmaceutical and industry specific development, manufacturing and regulatory matters
• Relevant experience in leading large, and legally complex, commercial transactions / projects
• Able to analyse complex legal issues
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; together with a high ability to influence and negotiate
• Able to set priorities and manage a wide-ranging work load under time pressure.
